Ethel Smith’s recording of Tico Tico, her best-known hit, reached No. 14 on the U.S. pop charts in November 1944 and sold over one million records worldwide, in the midst of WW II.   Ethel knew her way around the Hammond organ (which sounds like a line from Groucho Marx).  So I will withdraw the remark, and say that Ethel could pull out all the stops, and had the art of foot pumping down like the pro she was.  HL

Who knew there were pop charts in 1944.
