“When You and I Were Young, Maggie” by Peter Rowan and Jerry Douglas
Click here to download the album “Yonder.” Not avail as single mp3
This 1997 collaboration garnered a Grammy nomination. Peter Rowan, a Grammy winner and perennial nominee, handling vocals and guitar and mandolin teams with Jerry Douglas on the dobro and alchemist gold is the musical byproduct. Peter has been a Six Degrees of Separation guy, as has Jerry Douglas. Between the two, if you have not recorded with or appeared on stage with one of these two, you haven’t been trying or you aren’t very good in the first place.
To wit: Peter has worked with Jerry Garcia, Bill Monroe (Peter was the guitarist for the Bluegrass Boys), David Grisman, Seatrain, Bill Keith, Clarence White, Muleskinner, Vassar Clements, Richard Greene, String Band Project, Free Mexican Airforce, New Riders of the Purple Sage, John Kahn, Tony Rice, Cindy Cashdollar, Norman Blake, Alison Brown, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, Ricky Skaggs, Del McCoury, Don Edwards, Flaco Jimenez, Jim Rooney, and a bunch more folks.
Jerry Douglas is the preiminent dobro and resonator guitar player in the world and has more than a dozen Grammy awards to date, having recorded on, or produced over 750 albums!
Jerry has worked with a who’s who of great musical players, including Yo-Yo Ma, Alison Krauss (Jerry is a longtime member of Union Station), Chet Atkins, Vassar Clements, Mike Compton, Stuart Duncan, Greg Garing, Richard Greene, David Grier, David Grisman, John Hartford, Bobby Hicks, Kathy Kallick, Laurie Lewis, Mike Marshall, Del McCoury, Ronnie McCoury, Jim Nunally, Scott Nygaard, Tim and Mollie O’Brien, Alan O’Bryant, Herb Pedersen, Todd Phillips, John Reischman, Craig Smith, Chris Thile, Tony Trischka, Roland White, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Matraca Berg, Sam Bush, June Carter Cash, Johnny Cash, Vassar Clements, Iris DeMent, Rodney Dillard, Glen Duncan, Vince Gill, Josh Graves, Jamie Hanna, Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Jimmy Martin, Robbie McCoury, Jon McEuen, The Nashville Bluegrass Band, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Tony Rice, Earl Scruggs, Randy Scruggs, Ricky Skaggs, Doc Watson, Richard Watson, Dwight Yoakam, Russ Barenberg, Edgar Meyer, etc.
So these two are well traveled, highly in demand, deeply respected, and absolute workhorses. They are musician’s musicians.
“When You and I Were Young, Maggie” has been recorded by essentially everybody including Fats Waller, Don Reno, The Four Lads, Teddy Wilson, Dinah Shore, Bing Crosby, James Galway, Perry Como, Mac Wiseman, Mitch Miller, Sidney Bechet, and Hank Snow, and Louis Armstrong to name a small fraction. Guaranteed fact: That is the first time that Hank Snow and Louis Armstrong have ever appeared in the same sentence. “Maggie” is a grand song and Peter Rowan and Jerry Douglas do it proud. HL
