“High On A Mountain Top” by Loretta Lynn
Click here to download the mp3
Loretta has had a long and storied career. Her life, after all, was made into a movie, “Coal Miner’s Daughter” (1980) that starred Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones. That Loretta was born on an April 14th is not in dispute. Whether the year was 1932 or 1935 is.
From the 2004 album, Van Lear Rose, “High On A Mountain Top” is a great example of straight ahead country music with a foundation in the roots music of Kentucky’s coal mines. Van Lear in the album refers to the Van Lear Coal Mines near where Loretta was born, rather famous in Country Music circles- Butcher Holler.
Loretta began her recording career in 1960. Ultimately, she would have 16 #1 Country hits (and counting) and it would have been more, but for the fact that some of her songs were too controversial to get airplay on country radio, back in the day.
She has won every award available to her as a country music artist. Here is my favorite Loretta Lynn song, “High On A Mountain Top, which is our Song of the Day. HL
